The Punjab government has decided to reconstitute drug courts to effectively address the growing challenges associated with drug-related issues.

The bill was introduced in the Punjab Assembly, proposing the establishment of a new tribunal for drug cases, which will consist of one session judge and two experts.

The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court will appoint the session judge for a three-year term, while the Punjab government will select two experts with 15 years of experience for the same period. All three members will be required to participate in the final decisions of cases.

This amendment aims to provide autonomy to drug courts, similar to the structures of environmental and labor courts.

The new tribunal will specifically manage cases involving drug trafficking and substandard medications, ensuring efficient resolutions with expert involvement.

The bill has been referred to the relevant committee of the Punjab Assembly, which is expected to submit its report within two months.

The court will commence operations once the committee presents its report; only then will implementation actions take place.

This court will operate in line with other courts in Pakistan. Following the bill’s presentation, judges will be appointed, followed by the selection of experts, and decisions will be made only after these appointments are finalized.
