Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has said that it launched retaliatory strikes against US military targets in the region following what it described as American aggression against Iranian coastal areas.

In a statement, the IRGC Navy said its operation targeted “deployment sites of the US military” in response to US air strikes on areas along Iran’s coastline.

The force accused Washington of continuing a pattern of violating its commitments and engaging in provocations.

The statement said the United States had used “various pretexts,” including the passage of a vessel through what Iran described as an unauthorised route in the Strait of Hormuz, to justify its actions.

Earlier, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in West Asia, announced that it had carried out strikes on targets in Iran.

The Central Command said aircraft struck missile and drone ‌storage locations and coastal radar sites, later publishing a grainy black-and-white video of an explosion labelled “unclassified.”

A US official reported the operation had concluded.

Iran said a projectile struck the area around a pier in Sirik in southern Iran.

US officials said the action was in response to a drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel MV Ever Lovely on Thursday as it was leaving the Strait of Hormuz near the Omani coast.
